My homestead goals for 2021

Setting homestead goals is a new concept for me.

I know what I want to do but I've never written it down to hold me accountable.

We have a large garden and several fruit trees and berry bushes. We have chickens and even made an attempt with ducks and dairy goats (didn't go well!). I preserve as much as I can of the garden bounty and try to have a garden year around.

But actual homestead goals? This will be a first for me.

And I want to journal it here so I will be able to come back and look at it at the end of 2021 and see what we have accomplished. I want to give my best to this years homestead goals and really learn to be a better homesteader.

Here are my 2021 homestead goals:

  1. Grow and preserve 50% of all the vegetables we eat in a year. I wanted this to be 100% but I'm giving myself grace and aiming for 50%. I am planting for 100% because I know from experience that there are many obstacles beyond my control when it comes to gardening. Also, a large portion of our garden is a brand new area and it will take few years for the soil fertility to build up. I will make a separate post and list how much I plan to grow and preserve to meet this goal.

  2. Plant more berry bushes, fruit and nut trees.

  3. Post regularly on this blog. I aim to make at least 1 post each week and maybe even an update of what's happening on the homestead weekly.

  4. Have a homestead pantry/root cellar for all the preserved garden bounty. We don't have a pantry in our kitchen so I use shelves and that works just fine for me. But, If I am going to be intentional about preserving/canning garden goodies than I need a space to store that.

  5. Make compost! I know this may sound easy for some but for some reason I just can't seem to do it. This year, I am going to cut and collect as much hay as as I am able and add it to the chicken run. After a month or so in the chicken run I'll shovel it in to piles and let it compost.

  6. Finish painting the outside of the house. We started this project last year in late summer. The weather is cold now so the project is on hold for the time being. We will resume painting in spring.

That's it. It seems like a short list but I know these will keep me very busy all year long!

What are you goals for your homestead for 2021?
