What's new on the homestead this week

Spring has been here only 2 days and I am already tired. Springtime is very busy and it seems the work is never done. But I wouldn't have it any other way. Staying busy is good for my soul.

This week my father in law was here for a visit and he designed and built the frame for a well house that we really needed. My husband will put the siding on and insulate it in the near future.

I have been very busy planting out the lettuces, cabbages, cauliflower and broccoli. Unfortunately the brocolli was already nibbled, most likely a bunny. Our garden fence is 4 years old and not bunny proof. Oh well, this is why I plant extra.

We had lots of rain last week and with the warmer weather it seems spring is here full force! We have a large hay field so I took some time today mowing and collected the green clippings. My husband helped me mulch the strawberries, cabbages and onion beds. Ill need another load or two for mulching all the beds that will have spring seedlings.

I use what is available to me for mulching. I signed up for chip drop few years ago and am still waiting. So instead of buying wood chips, we use grass clippings, hay and leaves. The soil microbes are thriving with our method and our soil improves each year!
